How to Find Functional Swimwear for Active Women (Without Sacrificing Style)

How to Find Functional Swimwear for Active Women (Without Sacrificing Style)

There’s a difference between wearing a swimsuit and living in one.

For many women, swimwear has traditionally been designed for stillness. It’s made for lounging poolside, posing for photos, or simply looking good from a distance. But real life looks different.

Real life means swimming laps before work, chasing kids through splash pads, paddleboarding at sunset, walking the beach with friends, or saying yes to an impromptu cannonball contest.

When you actually move, your swimwear has to move with you.

As a lifelong swimmer, coach, swimwear designer, and mom of three, I’ve spent more time in swimsuits than most people. And surprisingly, the journey that led me to start LT Swimwear didn’t begin because I wanted to launch a brand. It began because I couldn't find a swimsuit for myself.

The Day I Realized Swimwear Wasn't Designed for Women Like Me

After having children, I spent several years focused on raising my family. By the time my youngest was five years old, I finally started feeling like myself again.

I was ready to invest in a great swimsuit.

Not because I wanted to sit by the pool looking perfect. I wanted a suit I could actually live in. Something I could swim in, play in, chase my kids in, and still feel confident wearing.

What I found was incredibly frustrating.

The styles that used to work for me no longer fit the same way.

My body had changed.

Nothing seemed to support my midsection the way I wanted. Underwire tops never fit my body comfortably. Triangle tops didn't provide enough support. Bottoms felt like they came in two extremes: either too little coverage or far too much.

I couldn't find anything that felt balanced.

More importantly, I couldn't find anything that made me feel like myself.

At first, I thought I was the only woman struggling with this.

I quickly learned I was wrong.

Why Most Swimwear Falls Short for Active Women

The biggest problem with much of today's swimwear is that it's designed primarily around appearance.

There's nothing wrong with wanting a swimsuit to look beautiful. Of course it should.

But beauty alone isn't enough when you're actually using your swimsuit.

Many women have experienced:

  • Straps that constantly slip

  • Tops that shift when they swim

  • Bottoms that require constant adjusting

  • Fabrics that stretch out with each wear

  • Ties that loosen or come undone

  • Hardware that breaks over time

These aren't just minor inconveniences.

They pull your attention away from the moment and back toward managing your swimsuit.

When you're constantly thinking about what you're wearing, you're not fully present in what you're doing.

The Three Non-Negotiables I Built LT Swimwear Around

When I started designing swimwear, I had three non-negotiable requirements.

Fit Like Athleisure

The best way I can describe the feeling I wanted is athleisure.

When you put on your favorite workout leggings, you don't worry about them.

They're secure.

They move with you.

They feel supportive without feeling restrictive.

That's exactly how swimwear should feel.

A swimsuit should fit snugly enough to stay in place while remaining comfortable enough to wear all day.

Coverage That Feels Just Right

Coverage is deeply personal.

What surprised me while talking to women was how many felt stuck between two options: tiny bikinis or full-coverage suits that didn't reflect who they were.

Most women weren't looking for more fabric.

They were looking for thoughtful coverage.

Coverage that helped them feel comfortable, confident, and attractive without feeling exposed.

Eliminate Unnecessary Hardware

The more ties, clips, and moving parts a swimsuit has, the more opportunities it has to fail.

That's why I intentionally designed LT styles to minimize hardware wherever possible.

Less adjusting.

Less breaking.

Less worrying.

More swimming.

What Women Have Taught Me About Functional Swimwear

One of the biggest surprises in building this company was realizing how emotional swimwear really is.

I knew I had struggled to find a suit.

I didn't realize how many other women felt exactly the same way.

Over and over, I hear stories from customers who spent years avoiding swimsuits, settling for something that "worked well enough," or feeling defeated every time they shopped.

Then something changes when they find a suit that truly fits.

It's not just about support.

It's not just about coverage.

It's about feeling comfortable enough to participate.

Women tell me:

  • "I finally feel comfortable at the pool again."

  • "I don't have to adjust it."

  • "I can actually play with my kids."

  • "This is the first swimsuit I've loved in years."

  • "I've had this suit forever and it's still going strong."

The durability comment always makes me smile.

Most brands want you shopping for new swimwear every season.

I don't.

I want you to find a suit you love and wear it for years.

What to Look for When Choosing Functional Swimwear

If you're searching for swimwear that supports an active lifestyle, focus on function first.

Look for:

  • Secure straps that stay in place

  • Compression fabrics that hold their shape

  • Construction designed for movement

  • Coverage that matches how you actually spend your time by the water

  • Minimal hardware that can break, loosen, or irritate

Most importantly, think about how you plan to use your swimsuit.

Swimming laps requires something different than sunbathing.

A day chasing kids looks different than a resort vacation.

The best swimsuit is the one that supports your real life.

The Moment I Know We've Gotten It Right

There is a moment I see all the time during try-ons.

A woman walks into the fitting room unsure.

She tries on a suit.

Then she comes out and something changes.

She lights up.

There's a visible shift in energy.

She's no longer analyzing her body or questioning the swimsuit.

She's imagining herself wearing it.

At the pool.

At the beach.

On vacation.

At the lake.

With her family.

The swimsuit disappears and the experience takes center stage.

That's the moment I design for.

Not just a better swimsuit.

A woman who feels empowered to show up.

A woman who feels supported enough to stop thinking about her swimsuit and start enjoying her life.

Because the best swimwear isn't the swimsuit that looks perfect standing still.

It's the one that gives you the confidence to jump in the pool.
